Plants are grown in clear-sided containers, facilitating root imaging. Automated feature extraction has been developed to identify roots and determine their changing distribution in the soil column over time. This approach is being used to quantify variation in root behaviour in cereals and forage grasses.

Visual images show the root growth and distribution

We can use our Near IR (0.75-1.4 micron) images to indicate the water content in the root column. We then Join visual images and NIR together to indicate the influence of water distribution on root growth.
